LED lights

There are plenty of reasons why LED lights are superior to other types of light.

Firstly, what are LED lights? LED stands for light-emitting diode. So basically an LED is a semiconductor light source.

Why choose LED lights?

LEDs have many advantages over other light sources.

They use less energy so are far more cost effective. LED lights are cheaper than using fluorescent and incandescent lights.
A standard halogen lamp turns 90% of electricity used into heat and only 10% into light, while LED lights use only 15% of the energy a standard halogen uses, and provides up to 85% of the light output. By using less energy, your power bills will be greatly reduced.

LEDs have a longer life span.
Technology advancements mean that LED lights can now be used in modern lighting applications, replacing the traditional light bulb. The life expectancy of LED lights is 80, 000 plus hours - or about 30 plus years of use.

LED lights are more durable than other lighting options.
LED lights have no filaments so can stand more vibration and shock than standard lights - so there is less risk of breakage.

LED lights are fast switching
LED Lights start at full brightness every time so there is no need for backup lighting. They can be switched on and off instantly so they are ideal for flashing signs, traffic lights and automotive lights, compared to other lighting options which fade or flicker.

LED lights are more compact than other light sources.
LED light bulbs can be as small as a couple of millimetres so they can fit into very compact and difficult to reach areas.

LED lights are safer than other lighting options.
Most LED lights operate at low voltage so are cool to touch. This makes them much safer to handle during installation and maintenance. It also means they can be used in rain and snow.

LED lights are environmentally friendly
The benefit of LED lights is that they are an environmentally friendly form of lighting as they do not contain mercury or other harmful gasses or emit any harmful UV rays.

Are there any disadvantages of using LED lights?
The main limitation to using LED lights is the current high cost of LED bulbs. But remember your power bills will be reduced because LED lights are far more cost efficient than other lighting sources.

It seems that LED lights are the light source of the future. More and more people are using LEDs for lighting – whether it be for indoors or out.

To find out more about LED lights do your own research or ask an electrician. Ask a supplier of LED lights to tell you their benefits and disadvantages and make your own informed decisions when choosing the lighting for your home or office.
